I am a resident of Portland, Oregon and am writing to beseech you to enact in Oregon the same executive orders that have been issued in New York and Washington, authorizing all pharmacists within state lines to prescribe and issue COVID vaccinations to any person who desires one, and allowing immunocompromised people to receive additional doses if they self-attest to a qualifying condition.
The current barrier of seeing a physician to receive a prescription places the vaccine beyond the financial capacity of many citizens, but specifically the chronically ill and those with disabilities, who are most at risk. Insisting on a physician’s appointment is expensive, physically taxing, hard to get, and highly risky due to a lack of masking in doctors offices and a current COVID spike. Allowing people to receive the latest Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax COVID vaccine by simply requesting one means those who need this vaccine the most are also likely to receive it. The order must make crystal clear to all pharmacists that this is not subjective: they are required to offer the vaccine to those who want one.
This order must extend to children over 6 months, as it has proven difficult in the last few years for parents to secure these immunizations from pediatricians for the reasons above. By authorizing pharmacists to perform the same duties they did under emergency order in 2021, you ensure that all Oregonians will be protected.
Please act with haste, as we are eagerly awaiting this booster amidst a national spike in cases, and can not currently secure a dose under current conditions.
